The Impact of ACEs on Breastfeeding among Black Women

November 12, 2021

This event was created in collaboration with the Sacramento WIC office to focus on how to address and dismantle stereotypes, disparities in breastfeeding, and the impact of past trauma on black women and breastfeeding behavior. Topics also included how to cultivate cultural humility and incorporate ACES screening in maternal healthcare. Featured speakers for this event were Tanya Khemet Taiwo, CPM, MPH, PhD; Aqueelah Russell, MBA, IBCLC, LCCE; and Tamesha Valverde, IBCLC, Mother, Doula, Advocate, Co-Founder of Flourishing Families, Inc. this was an ACES Aware sponsored event.

The California Department of Public Health, The Center at Sierra Health Foundation, Vaccinate All 58, and California Black Health Network presented “Candid Conversations: COVID-19 & The Black and African American Community… What’s Next?”, a virtual town hall meeting featuring guest panelists Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, Surgeon General for the State of California; Dr. Oliver T. Brooks, chief medical officer at Watts Healthcare Corporation (Los Angeles); Dr. David Tom Cooke, FACS, associate professor and chief, division of general thoracic surgery at UC Davis Health (Sacramento); and Rhonda M. Smith, executive director at California Black Health Network (Sacramento).

The Impact of ACES on Black Maternal Health

This event focused on effective approaches to address the needs of Black pregnant women, the impact of ACES, and its association with maternal health and poor birth outcomes for Black women, Medi-Cal recipients, and others. This event is designed for all health care providers across California who are interested in learning about the importance of and the role of ACES screening in addressing and improving Black Maternal Health and Infant Mortality outcomes.

Achieving Black Health Equity and Covid-19
